Although the picture above doesn’t look like it, we had a pretty wet, cold, windy and miserable time for much of our stay on Bruny Island. In the end we were pretty happy to leave, but we had also had some interesting times in the patches of sunshine.
We were camped at Adventure Bay, which in sunshine was a beautiful little seaside community and we were about 20m from the beach. We tried fishing unsuccessfully a couple of times, but my feet froze and I had to give it away pretty quickly.
We explored the Island pretty thoroughly and manager to get around to Cloudy Bay as well as all the way north to Dennes Point. When we were down south at Cloudy Bay, the weather was pretty wild as it was basically copping the full brunt of the winds coming straight up from Antarctica.
We enjoyed our day on the northernmost part of the island the most, mainly because the weather stayed fine all day and we were able to enjoy the outside world. Sarah took the kids to the quarantine stations which has some historical significance and they found it quite interesting from what their stories say.
It is a no-dog zone, so I took Jett for a walk back to Dennes Point while the others explored at the quarantine station.
We then walked around the point, which has an interesting history of its own – both after European arrival and for the preceding 30,000 years.
On the way back to Adventure Bay we stopped off for a taste of Whiskey (but decided even the tasting was too rich for our blood). It was a good spot to enjoy the sunshine and we did try some liqueur and some mead (although it wasn’t mead as far as I can tell – some sort of meady liqueur).
All was well with the world and then we set off for home and to start the packing for the next stage of our journey.
