Burra SA

It being Saturday today we started the day with our usual pancakes for breakfast and then headed off to do some sight seeing.

We are staying in Peterborough and the weather has been cold as cold can be. Sarah had the vision to book a powered site, so we have been running the heater in the tent 24/7 since we got here. Last night it rained, and it was changeable all day, with coats going on and then being taken off, sunglasses the same. We have had about 8 out of the last ten days of sunshine, so we can take a bit of gloom at the moment – particulalry because we are warm in the tent!

I digress…

We set off for the Peterborough farmers’markets which were advertised heavily around town. When we pulled in there we could see that there were two stalls, one selling plants and one selling second hand clothes. We don’t really need that stuff, but we were getting out despite that, when Hamish saw the no dogs sign, which sealed the deal for the farmers’ markets in Peterborough, and off we went to Burra (down the road about 100km)

Burra is a town founded on copper mining, and they have a lot of well-preserved historical buildings of interest and significance. For a few dollars and a deposit, we were given a key (there were many visitors with keys) which gave us access to the various places around the town and the mine.

It is an excellent concept and a great way to do a self-guided tour.

Of particular interest to me was the brewery which had a large underground cellar which reminded me (in a colonial way) of the cellars in Epernay.

We also visited the town hall which used to double as the cinema, and the volunteer there told us about watching the movies there in her childhood. The kids got to dress up and have some fun – and the dog was welcome everywhere – and enthusiastically welcomed by just about everyone.

The pictures will be more interesting than my words I am sure.
