Central Goldfields

Central Goldfields

0n a Tuesday we went to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat. First, we went to the diggings which was where the gold miners slept. The diggings had lots and lots of tents. We went on a tour which went around the diggings.

Next, we went on a tour in a mine. We walked through the mine until we came to a halt. Water was leaking. Suddenly the mine radio said that the leak was clear, and the leak stopped.

We continued walking along the track to get out. Then, when we were walking along the track a hologram appeared and we watched the hologram. It was about the man who discovered the biggest nugget of gold ever existing and it was found in that exact spot. Then we went out.

Next, we went to the lolly demonstration where they made little bits of toffy. They poured it on a table, waited 15 mins and then rolled them in a roller. At the end we each got one free toffy piece.

The next demonstration we went to was the printing demo. The person printing put the blank piece of paper in the old 1800’s printer, and it came out with writing. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see the writing. Next, we went to the main road and watched a few Red Coat Soldiers. They marched along the main road and around a square. Then they raised their guns and shot… gunpowder! Annoying!

Next, we went to the gold pour where the demonstrator took a hot cup with gold in it out of a furnace. Then he poured the gold into a Mould. When the gold was a bit stiff, he slammed the mould onto the table and there was a block of gold. Then he went to the freezing water and put the gold in, and the water started to steam. Then he took the gold out and held it up.

Next, we went to a wheel demo where we saw people make a wooden wheel. When we walked in, we saw all the machines hanging off the roof were going. We saw the man put the wood log in a saw and it was cut into a mid-wheel shape (the shape in the middle of the carriage wheel).

Next, we went to a candle demonstration where we saw a person put a candle in a little bucket of colour and take it out then put it in another bucket of colour and again and again. This made a candle which had rainbow colours.

Next, we went to the gift shop and I bought a gold-plated little man panning for gold. Then we went home to our tent in Mt Franklin.

  • Hello Hamish,
You certainly saw a lot of demonstrations, and all of them interesting by the sound of it. I guess the lolly making one was your favourite?
