Heidi on the Train Museum
- May 22, 2023
We woke up to find that we were going to Steamtown Railway Heritage Centre in Peterborough. We are staying at Peterborough Caravan Park with power and about a ten min walk to the centre of the main street. Anyway, back to Steam Town Railway Heritage Centre.
We booked our tour at the front desk and then waited about ten minutes till it started. We passed the time by looking at the gift shop and going to the loo because there were no facilities on the tour.
When our tour guide came and told us to go down a slope and bend your knees into the Diesel Shed. We didn’t do much in there because it was a do by yourself activity so we would do it after instead. We could also do another shed but we didn’t do it because we were starving afterwards.
We then went to the Diesel Yard and found what used to be the Diesel Train Parking for over night parking in the open air but under cover and it’s got a hole in the roof so you can let all the steam out.
We learned about the work and what little changers can make probably saved some lives back then.
We also went to train wheel height and saw some were taller than Hamish we’ve got a few photos to show you.
After that we went to some of the old carriages and in some of then we even went inside, and it felt with everyone that we were stepping back in time. Some of the carriages were so beautiful and stood out amongst the others. When we went to a passenger carriage there was a box where you put your pet and poor pets must have gone deaf because it was close to the wheel.
As we walked back we were starving so we had a quick look in the Diesel Shed and then bought our gifts mine was a rainbow pen like the one I got in Whyalla Steel Works but in Whyalla in had three dolphins’ on a key ring whereas here it’s got three trains.

So you know lots about trains now Heidi?
I guess having power at your campsite, is just like staying in a B&B?! Lucky you.
