Port Arthur Surrounds

Port Arthur Surrounds

While down Port Arthur way we decided to visit a few other interesting places, including a couple of local blowholesand caves along the cliffs.

Despite myself I was quite interested in the varied geology of the points and headlands where we were exploring. The views we saw were stunning, and once again we were lucky with the weather, while the rest of the east coast of Australia is getting smashed by the on-going rain events.

The kids have been quite enthusiastic about hiking around the historic sites, up hills, into forests, out along wild coast lines and through leach-infested forests (just the once so far). Mum also lent us a digital camera so that they can take their own photos everywhere we go, and that is proving to be most appreciated by them. As a result, we all became quite interested in getting some good shots of the wide variety of flowers that we came across on our Maingon Blowhole walk (hence the many flower shots in the gallery below).

Once you start to look carefully at the landscape here, the variety of plants surviving and thriving in this harsh place is quite amazing (a lot of the time the gales here are blowing in unhindered from the Antarctic).

We visited a second blowhole and some other interesting caves and coastline on our way back to Hobart.
