The South Coast to Murray River Country

The South Coast to Murray River Country

I am going to write about five walks that I have done in one day. This day was a hot day and we left at about morning tea time -10 o’clock.

When we drove to the entrance of the national park at Wilson’s Promontory and then drove to the car park and shuttle bus stop, it was fifty mins from where we are camping. When we reached the end we had to wait ten minutes until the shuttle bus came in that time we had a look at a supermarket for the campers. I forgot to mention there was so many campers in the national park – it was roads and roads of them.

When the shuttle bus was over we climbed up Mt Oberon and got to the top and ate our lunch with a marvelous view dawning upon us. After lunch four kids and two adults caught up with me and mum. Good thing we were about to finish our lunch!

On the way down we were fifteen minutes earlier then what we were supposed to be (according to the walk speed guide), but we caught the shuttle bus because it was already down there (at the bottom).

Then we went into our car and drove to the next walk with a car park – this was dove lake circuit. It was flat for half of it and then we did a little board walk. Then we went up and up and up then we came into a path that was to Mt Bishop. Then we went up and up and up then we went down, down, down, down, down, down into the car park. At the end there was a sign that showed 2009 bushfire!

After that walk we went to one beach and two bays. The first beach was named Norman Beach and Norman beach looked wonderful. It had white sand and water that eventually blended into dark blue!

The first bay was Picnic Bay and it hand a little river and not a lot of beach. It was more of a calm bay you go swimming in. The last bay that we saw was Whisky Bay. It had a brown clouded river flowing into the sea. It was rocky around the edge like a boarder. Then we drove back home to our camp and it only took 25mins from where we were. Then I had a nice warm shower and a good sleep.

So, we have now moved to a new place called Mongen’s Bridge in the middle of nowhere [in the mountains with no shops we have to drive to everything] but good thing we had a river to swim in and blow-up paddle board. It was freezing.

When we went for our first drive, we went to a place called Bright and in Bright we went for a small drive around the town and then we went for a small walk to the op shop in search for books.

After the walk we changed into our togs and went to the water park but we couldn’t go in the water on the Ovens River because it might make us sick. After the water park we drove back home ready for an icy pole.

Two days later we went for a drive up to a lookout looking out on Mt Bishop the tallest mountain in Victoria. After the lookout we went for a walk up to Mt Beauty.

In the walk we were walking in the sun but then we entered the forest of Mt Beauty. We walked and walked up and up before coming to a halt and reading about the mines in Mt Beauty that went something like 49 miles into the mountain going down, down, down into the Earth’s surface. At the end of the walk we reached an area where we had to cross the water 4 times before reaching a place where we went swimming it was freezing.

When we were back at the end of the walk and back at the bridge, we had a swim and a good rest.

We left on Tuesday, and we went to where I am now – Lockington near Echuca on the Murry River.

[fun fact: the Murry River is the third longest river in the WORLD!]

We drove to Echuca on day one and two.

On day one we went to the PORT OF ECHUCA and it had a train station that they used to transport wool and livestock etc. After a short look around the site we watched a paddle steamer do it’s thing and arrive at the port. Mum had left to the toilet according to dad. Mum returned by running at us holding tickets for the paddle steamer. We walked through a gate and into a port we went down two flights of stairs and boarded the boat. We sat down on a large fluffy cube and waited. There were at least five dozen boats in the port and on the ride down the river. After thirty minutes we turned around and went back to the port, but we looked around on boat. All I have to say is that the steering wheel was giant and wooden.

On the second day I went with Mum and Hamish to buy new socks and do a little walk. On the way back from the walk we stopped at the lolly shop and I had a two dollars and fifty limit, but I got five extra cents to but a warhead chew and two taffy ropes. We also stopped by the book shop and bought two Minecraft books.

On our third day, Friday, we went to Bendigo and we went on a dog friendly tram that played a clip on the history of the town and the mines as well as the buildings. We looked around for a while before running under cover because it was raining. We then drove home and here I am typing this triple story.

  • Hello Heidi,
Your story was really interesting, although I do feel really tired after reading about all that walking you are doing. Well done you! Going on a paddle steamer would have been fun, and not something you get to do every day.
