At the biggest rock in all of Australia, Uluru was waiting for us standing there like this was a normal day but it wasn’t. We were here at last, at last.

As we set up in Yulara campground we realised that we were camping next to our friend from Coober Pedy, Charlize. We would only see Charlize for two days then she would leave to our next campsite at King’s Canyon.

On our first day we walked around Uluru and saw a few different types of caves. The first one was the teaching cave and in this teaching cave were drawings that the Aboriginals drew like drawing on a white board that you can’t rub out.

The next cave was the cooking cave and in the cooking cave was where the women would grind seeds into bread and cook the food that the men and boys collect.

The last cave that I can remember was called the old man’s cave. In the old man’s cave the old men would sit around telling stories to the young to teach them to follow the rules, for example, don’t go out of sight or someone will get you.

As we walked around Uluru we saw people riding bikes and some people on segways.

As we turned yet another corner of Uluru I saw a rock that looked like a face on its side and as we walked down the path we found it was a face, a face called Liru and Kuniya.

Liru is a venomous snake and Kuniya the water python once went over the Liru and hit him on the head then hit him again on the head before going back to its waterhole.

After we passed a few more corners then we were finished 10.3km.

The next day we sailed off to Kata Tjuta and we did the rim walk that was 7.3km but took longer because it was a steeper walk and a harder walk altogether.

We saw on the walk that the green plains were green because it had rained recently.

We then kept walking up and down and up and down and so on and so forth.

After that walk we did another walk and it wasn’t really a walk for us. It was not a stumble but a run.

We were running, not doing a race but running not anything else apart from looking around. Oh no, we were running!

When we were back home we went to our chairs then rode our bikes.

  • You’ll be fitter than nearly everyone in Australia with all that walking you’re doing Heidi! Not sure what you were up to in one of the photos taken on one of the walks. Just having fun no doubt.
